Global Solucions Summit 2025

I am happy to share my experience at the GlobalSolutionsSummit in Berlin, which I was invited to attend last week on 5-6 May. It was an inspiring gathering of global change-makers from various sectors. Here are my key takeaways from the wide range of sustainability initiatives discussed:

🔹 Digital Agency in an Age of Uncertainty: Explored how to navigate digital transformation and AI, ensuring public interest and data agency while fostering innovation:

 In the T20 Deep Dive Session on "Reimagining Resilience in an Age of Uncertainty" a new toolkit (link below) for policymakers on digital infrastructure to empower citizens was introduced. The challenge lies in controlling rapid innovation while ensuring public interest and data agency.

CommunityDrivenDigitalCommons: Emma GHARIANI - Head of the Open Source and Digital Commons Division emphasized the importance of community-driven open source digital public infrastructure (DPI). 

🌟 Key Insights:

- New toolkit is a diagnostic tool for the bulding of a digital public infrastructure

- Civil society is key driver holding state accountable, state as orchestrator

- Good Practices are Estonia's XRoad and IndiaStack.

🔹 Panel on Just Energy Transition and Decarbonization: 50 Hertz CEO, Stefan Kapferer, Eon CEO, Leo Birnbaum and former brazilian minister of environment Izabella Teixeira engaged in insightful discussions on sector coupling, infrastructure expansion, and energy security. Highlighted the need for a systemic approach to energy transition, emphasizing that we already have sufficient renewable energy capacity in some regions. The focus should be on creating positive narratives and making just energy transitions good business. Birnbaum points out: Trumps "drill baby drill" will not change the economy, renewables will be not touched. Kapferer stresses that Asia will be the engine of the energy transition and Teixeira concludes "we need to keep walking, understanding the limits..." 

🌟 Key Insights:

- Africa and Asia's role in the global energy transition is critical

- Just energy transition means different things in different parts of the world; making it good business can drive success. Less micromanagement from public sector is needed

- Security of supply, affordability, and sustainability are the pillars of a systemic energy transition.

🔹Put Nature on the Balance Sheet: Inspiring talk by Jessika Roswall, EU Commissioner for Environment, who introduced the concept of a "nature coin" to integrate nature into economic frameworks.

🌟 Key Insights:

- We are in the most important moment to act and innovate!

- We need to simplyfy things were we can.

 - Nature Finance: Stopping the degregation of nature by putting a price tag on it
